REACTION TO N.Z. GOODS

‘’Prejudice Not Justified” People were still not convinced that New Zealandmade goods were of a quality comparable with any overseas product, and the many consumers who looked for foreign labels on their purchases were doing New Zealand a great disservice, the president of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation •Mr R. H Stewart) said at the opening last evening of the New Zealand Industries Fair. New Zealand manufacturers had initiative. New Zealand workers had ability. Lack of support by New Zealand people was the industries’ major problem, he said. The slogan “Well Made New Zealand" could, perhaps, have been viewed with suspicion 10 years ago. but now people could assume that it must be good if it was made in this country. Those who considered articles made overseas preferable to those locally produced were an economic hindrance—and a quite unjustifiable one, said Mr Stewart. There was a vital need for manufacturers to develop a “New Zealand image" in production if this almost universal prejudice was to be overcome, he said.
