BRIGHTON PIER

Public Meeting

Called

A public meeting will be held in New Brighton on September. 2 in a last attempt to save the New Brighton pier. The meeting, to be held in the Pier Restaurant, is being organised by the Christchurch East Rotary Club.

The City Council has decided that it will not finance the repair of the pier, estimated to cost £20,000. Mr L. H. Duffield, the lessee of the pier, cannot finance the repairs and will demolish it unless the council accepts responsibility for restoring it. Mr P. D. Dunbar, a member of the Christchurch East Rotary Club, estimates that it would cost approximately £3OOO to get rid of the pier —pull out all the piles, and so on.

The meeting is to establish what can be done to save the pier. A sub-committee comprising Messrs B. F. Cunningham, R. G. Trist and Dunbar is marshalling information to put before the meeting a statement of the legal and practical aspects of any move towards restoration.

The chairman of the City Council’s reserves committee (Cr. P. J. Skellerup) said yesterday that if there was sufficient public interest in keeping the pier the matter should be reviewed. But there would need to be more than expressions of sentiment—the public must consider the cost.
