Sportsman’s Notebook Coaching Films To Benefit Badminton

The president of the New Zealand Badminton Federation, Mr G. B. Drew, announced in Wellington that a number of sponsored coaching film strips, together with tape commentaries are to be produced. Mr Drew said that it has been the aim of the New Zealand Federation to obtain suitable coaching media for the hundreds of new players taking up the rapidly growing sport each year. The offer from Shell Oil New Zealand, Ltd. will enable the federation to use the coaching ability and knowledge of J. E. Robson, New Zealand’s greatest player in the post-war decade. Copies of the film will be made available to all associations next year. These will be of immense value to the many honorary coaches throughout the country, who are coaching beginners of all ages, primary and secondary school pupils and older people taking up badminton for the first time.

With Malaya, India and South Africa all touring New Zealand in September, and Australia having recently completed an extensive tour, badminton has made the greatest progress in its 35-year history. ¥ ¥ ¥ Cricketing Loss It is unfortunate for the Marist Cricket Club that K T. Sheehy, who for the last few seasons has been a frequent member of the Lancaster Park senior team, has been transferred from Christchurch; Sheehy intended to play for the Marist club in the coming season and his ability as an all-rounder could have done much to assist the ciub in attaining its goal of senior status.

A fast-medium bowler who can maintain his pace far lengthy spells, Sheehy is also quite, a sound batsman especially when using the long handle. Sheehy has been transferred to Palmerston North and will be playing cricket there. ¥ ¥ ¥ All-Rounder The record of B. Gardiner, now of Timaru and formerly of Greymouth, would not be an easy one to surpass. Be-

fore moving from the West Coast three years ago he represented the province at Rugby League and cricket, and also played for the South Island and was a New Zealand reserve at League. Since he has been in Timaru, he has represented South Canterbury at Rugby and was an All Black trialist. Recently he reached the final of the South Island C grade squash championships only to be defeated in five sets.

He has also held the Canterbury shot put championship and, while attending St. Bede’s, he played in the first XV and represented the school ait athletics. ¥ ¥ ¥ Leading Scorers M. W. Williment (Wellington), who was top points scorer in first-class Rugby last season, and the All Black full-back, D. B. Clarke, are the leading scorers so far this season. Both have totals of 62. Three other full-backs, M. C. M. Cormack (Auckland). M. Walters (North Auckland) and M. R. Delaney (Nelson), have reached the half-century. The leading try-scorer is I. R. Macßae 'Hawke’s Bay), with 10.
