TWO ADDED TO SQUAD

Sykes, Pirie Selected The Suburbs centre threequarters. V. C. Sykes, who in his solitary season in representative Rugby in 1958 played for Canterbury and South Island, will be one of 17 players from whom the Canterbury team to play Otago at Dunedin next Saturday will be selected. Sykes and D. Pirie. the Merivale hooker, have been added to the representative training squad and with three other players—P. A. Hutchison (University), D. Johnston (Old Boys i. and J. Francis (waikari) —will travel to Dunedin late this week to join the Canterbury touring team. Seven members of the touring side will be returning to Christchurch for the inter-island match; two other players selected for South Island J. M. Le Lievre and J. N. Creighton (reserve), were not available for the tour.

The Canterbury side plays Southland at Invercargill on Wednesday. Otago on Saturday and South Canterbury at Timaru on August 14. The following Saturday it will play Auckland at Lancaster Park. The 17 players from whom the Canterbury team to play Otago will be selected will be: D. C. Leary. W. F. Birtwistle. P. H. Clarke. P. A. Hutchison. V. C. Sykes, D. Johnston, G. A Stanley. M. F. Whitta: I. H Penrose. T. H. Moynihan N, G. Cornelius. A. Hopkinson, J Francis. R. M. Wainohou. C. R Hockley. D. Pirie and E. Veal.

Clarke, w’ho made his debut for Canterbury in the Wellington match earlier this season, received a head Injury w’hile playing for Albion against Merivale on Saturday and was carried from the ground on a stretcher. He attended practice yesterday but did not take an active part in the training. The selectors (Messrs R. H. Duff and M. J. Dixon) are awaiting a medical report before deciding whether he should play on Wednesday.
