FLOOD “NEAR MISS”

Catchment Bd. Assessment

The recent flood levels In the board’s area had been a “near miss” —the biggest it had been able to handle, Mr A. T. Bell told a meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday. A full report would not be available before the September meeting, but the chief engineer had estimated that the peak flow in the Selwyn river was 22.000 cusecs, and the recording on the new bridge, five inches below peak level, had been 20,030 cusecs.

Inspections and repairs of damage on the Selwyn and Ashley rivers were arranged at yesterday’s meeting. In view of recent flood damage, particularly from Bishop’s Gully, the board decided to renew its approaches to have the percentage of works costs charged to residents removed or subsidised. It will seek the support of the Ministry of Works and the Railways Department.
