PASSING SCHOOL BUSES
Obligations Of Motorists Many motorists seemed unaware of their obligations when passing school buses, said the City Council’s Traffice Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) yesterday. When the Sign "School Bus” was displayed the maximum permissible speed past the bus when it was stopped was 10 miles an hour, Mr Thomas said. The signs were permitted to be displayed only when the bus was used for carrying school children. The regulations laid down a maximum penalty of £5O for exceeding 10 miles an hour past a stationary school bus. The signs have black lettering on a yellow background, and the minimum size of the lettering under the regulations is six inches. Signs on school buses were discussed at a meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee recently. Some members felt the signs should be bigger; others suggested different colours could be used. One member suggested the speed limit of 10 miles an hour be included on the sign. It was pointed out that the regulatinos laid down the colour and the minimum size of the signs, and it was said that a colour scheme which would contrast with one company's buses might merge with the colour adopted by other companies for their vehicles Members also said that to include the speed limit on the signs would necessitate either larger signs or smaller lettering.
