COMPETITIONS IN SPEAKING
Federated Debating Societies About 120 competitors in 18 teams will take part in the annual competitions of the Christchurch Federated Debating Societies next week-end in the W.E.A. rooms, Gloucester street. On Saturday prepared speeches by novices will be judged by Mr N. Bilcliff, and oratory will be judged by Mr D. Ames. Competitors in this section must deliver a self-composed oration lasting eight minutes. In the evening the preliminary of the impromptu-speech section will be held. Competitors are to speak for five minutes after one minute’s preparation. On Sunday morning the preliminaries of the debating section will be held, and in the afternoon there will be the prepared-speech section. The finals of the impromptu speeches and the debating will be held in the evening
The prepared speech will be judged by Mr A. B. Ryan and the debating by Mr C. E. Purchase.
The subject of the preliminary debates will be “That New Zealand Should Seek Union with Australia.” The subject for the final will be “That the North-South Population Drift Must Stop.” Teams taking the affirmative will be the Junior Chamber team, the W.E.A. class team, the W.E.A. club team, the University Dialectic team and the Forum team. Tne negative will be argued by the Riccarton Catholic. Central Catholic. Teachers’ College, and Ric-carton-Hornby Junior Chamber teams.
On the Sunday evening prizes will be presented by the president of the federated societies (Mr P. McErlain).
