PRODUCTION OF FERTILISER
Decrease In Use Of Lime Although there was a useful increase in the total tonnage of fertiliser produced in New Zealand during the last year it was offset to some degree by a further loss of production of 50,000 tons of agricultural lime, the national president of the New Zealand Bulk Fertilisers’ Association (Mr G. M. Meams) says in his report, which will be presented to the annual conference in Wellington tomorrow and on Saturday. There can be no doubt that the stow increase in fertiliser use and the continuing decline in lime use are two of the major problems associated with farming progress, he says.
“On these tonnages rest our operators’ revenue, and a speeding up of progress is essential if we are to keep pace with the costs,” Mr Mearns says. Provisions in the Budget this year to promote the use of fertiliser and lime should achieve the result the association feels would have been brought about by the reintroduction of a full lime transport assistance scheme. During the year efforts in support of the New Zealand lime Millers’ Association to have this scheme reinstated proved fruitless, Mr Mearns says.
