TRAIN HITS WAGGONS
Guard Injured (N.Z. Press NEW PLYMOUTH. July 24 Waggons lurched off the line and a guard was injured as a 550-ton goods train hit a rake of seven waggons in the New Plymouth railway yards early this morning. The guard, Mr C. G. Wills, was flung from his seat in the van of the goods train and cut hie arm as the driver slammed on his brakes moments before the powerful diesel locomotive rammed the waggons. The goods train arriving from the Wanganui marshalling yards at East Town, about 2.30 a.m. was drawing into the New Plymouth station when the driver, Mr V E. Edgar, realised he was on the wrong track and heading for the waggons. He applied his brakes but was too late to stop a violent collision.
