0. Sarapu To Play In Djakarta The New Zealand chess champion, O. Sarapu, of Auckland, is to represent the Dominion at a zonal tournament in Djakarta, Indonesia, during September and October. The money for his fare is being raised by the New Zealand Chess Association. The tournament covers Zone 10 in a global division. Other countries represented will include Indonesia, Australia. and the Philippines. The tournament was originally intended to last a month, but some countries have told the organisers this is too long, and the arrangements may be revised. It is at present intended that if there are eight entries or fewer the players will meet each other twice, and if more than eight there will be only a single round.
Clarke Club Champion
R. D. Clarke has become the 1963 Canterbury Chess Club champion, having finished the competition half a point ahead of his nearest rival, G. V. Sumner. Last time both players entered for the tournament, two years ago. the position was exactly reversed. Sumner winning by a half-point from Clarke. Clarke was the winner in 1960. while in 1962 the tournament was won by L. J Walpole, who did not ofay this year. The leading scorers were:— Clarke 7, Sumner 6J. A. L Wilkinson and A. J Nyman (equal) SJ. A. S Hollander 5. The intermediate tournament was won by W. P Lough ton (5) points out of 6), with B R. Anderson (4J points) second
