Arts Council Grants

WELLINGTON, July 23. Several grants to assist the arts, made on the recommendataion of the Arts Advisory Council, were announced today by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Leon Gotzi who is chairman of the council. A grant of £5OO for the year ending next March 31, and a £1 for £1 subsidy with a limit of £5OO on money raised from community sources, will be made to the Auckland String Players. Other grants to musical organisations include one of £2OO to the Federation of
Contemporary Music Societies, for general purposes. The Federation of Chamber Music Societies grant for' the year will be increased from £750 to £1350 to assist its work of arranging and financing concert tours by distinguished chamber music groups. The Wellington Youth Orchestra will receive a, grant of £250 for general! purposes.
After the success of a course for ballet students holding .Arts Advisory Council awards for training in New Zealand held in Wellington during the May! school holidays, a similar course will be held during the August holidays. All expenses of the course will be met by the Arts Advisory Council. A grant of £5OO would be made to the Auckland Architectural Students’ Association to bring Mr A. van Eyck, a distinguished Dutch architect, to the Pacific congress in Auckland in September and to make a lecture tour afterwards. A grant of £3OO will bej made to pay for copying! water colours of early New Zealand from a collection assembled by the Auckland Art Gallery for exhibition i next month. Colour transparencies will be made of the | paintings for records and tor| use in educational institu-i tions. The Dunedin Civic Arts Council will receive £l6O and the Federation of Film Societies £ 500.
