Obituary Mr G. L. HIGHT

Mr Gilbert Leslie Hight, who died in Christchurch recently. was known for his interest in public welfare. Mr Hight was a veteran of World War I. serving m Palestine and France, where he was wounded. After his discharge in 1917, he studied agriculture and took up beekeeping in Hororata. He retired in 1933. After a period in Rennerdale Home. Mr Hight went to live in Opawa. where he became interested in the library, the school committee, and the Methodist Church. He worked for C.0.R.5.0., for the Mission o Lepers, and for the New Zealand Alliance as treasureand collector. MR S. F. VARNHAM (N.Z. Press Association; GISBORNE, July 24 Mr Stuart Frederick Varnham. a veteran of two world wara, died at his home in Gisborne last night. He was 75. Mr Varnham commanded infantry units in both world wars. Leaving with the fourth reinforcements to the Ist N.Z.E.F. he saw service with the Wellington Battalion in Gallipoli, Egypt, and France He was awarded the Military Cross for his service in the Battle of Paschendale. On his return he was appointed manager of the “Taranaki Herald.” In the Second World War he commanded the 19th Battalion. After the war he was appointed secretary of the “Gisborne Herald." He retired in 1958. He was president of the Wellington Infantry Battalion Veterans’ Association and president of the Gisborne branch of Heritage. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. MR L. W. WALDRON (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI. July 24 A former chairman of the New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council, Mr L. W Waldron, died in Whangarei today He was 67. Mr Waldron was managingdirector of Specified Concrete (Whangarei), Ltd, and Waldrons Quarry. He introduced a ready-mixed concrete to Northland.
