GERMANS IN U.K.
Exercise For N.A.T.O. (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, July 24. The first German Air Force squadron to visit England since World War II touched down at the Royal Air Force base at Coltishall, Norfolk, yesterday.
Eight Canadian-built Sabres, part of an interceptor dayfighiter wing based ait Leek, on the German - Danish border, arrived for a 10-day exchange visit under the auspices of N A.T.O. In ref urn. a Ccltishall squadron will go to West Germany next year. During their stay the Luftwaffe pilots will fly alongside R.A.F men on exercises over East Anglia. With the eight pilots are a ground crew of 30 Germans, who made the trip in two transport planes. In charge of the German party is Hauptmann H. Franke, one of the first men to join the new German air force when it was re-formed in 1956.
Shortly before the Luftwaffe pilots arrived two veteran fighter planes, a Spitfire and a Hurricane, were moved from the runway “to avoid embarrassment.”
The two old fighter planes are the last remaining operational planes of their type in Britain.
Hurricanes and Spitfires bore the brunt of Britain's air defences during the Battle of Britain against the Luftwaffe.
