ACCIDENT-FREE DAY

Discussion By Committee Proposals for a New Zea-land-wide accident'-free day next year were briefly discussed by the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee last evening. A letter from the secretary of the New Zealand Road Safety Council (Mr H. Sellers) said that with the approval of the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) Friday, May 1, 1964. had been chosen as the target for a national accident-free day throughout New Zealand. The Original suggestion, which tyas based on a very successful nation-wide scheme carried out in Sweden several years ago. came from the North Otago Road Safety Committee. When discussing the suggestion the publicity subcommittee of the Road Safety Council decided a holiday week-end would not be a good choice and a working day would be best. Friday had been selected as it was the worst day of the week for accidents, and May was a month with a high accident rate. It was decided to hold the letter over to the next meeting for further discussion, after committee members had discussed the suggestion with their respective groups.
