RACING Bayline Gives Smooth Display Of Hurdling

Bayline, one of two Southland-owned runners in the Homeby Steeplechase on Saturday, gave a smooth, competent display over eight of the trial steeplechase fences at Riccarton yesterday.

Ridden by the amateur. K Langfrd. Bayline was accompanied by Chartlea Park (Coulter) and Sahib (Cairns', two more member* of the b.g Anderton team now at Riccarton.

They started at the brash near the top of the straight, •nd Chartlea Park lost a bit of ground with a slow leap. Chartlea Park drew up on the flat, but was squeezed for room when Sahib shifted ground going to the first of the double and dropped a Length or so behind hi* companions. They jumped the boards well, and in line, and finished a good display at the bruah dcutde, where Bayline drew slightly ahead. Bayline ha* had a wealth of experience ae a jumper and should be in no bother

over the steeplechase course proper on Saturday. Buhe is more of the plodding type of stayer, and two mJes and a half will probably be short of his best distance.

Captain Morgan (Cairns) jumped four hurdles cleanly •nd at a sound pace. Ho made a winning atari a* a hurdler at the Waimate Hunt meeting last Saturday week, then ran fourth at Waahdyke last Saturday. He has more galloping ability than the general run of South Island hurdling recrurto—be was an open-class winner on the flat—and should make an impression in hack hurdle races at the Riccarton carnival.

Cairn* will ride Captain Morgan in the Longbeach Hurdles on Saturday. The Hastings trainer, M. J. Burridge. has engaged the

Washdyke jockey. B. T. Jones, to ride Musketeer in the Homeby Steeples cn Saturday. Burridge inspected Cutis's yesterday, and now regards the big brush with some awe. Musketeer will be schooled over the trial steeplechase fence* this morning. He has a hurdling background this winter and was runner-up to Count Lin in the Collinson Hurdle* at the Manawatu winter meeting; bu he won over country at Gisborne in a light programme last season.

Baron's Craig. Sir Totara. and Lombard, the three other northerners in the Homeby Steeples field, were exercised at Riccarton yesterday. Baron's Craig will school with Ere when if the steeplechase course is opened this morning.

Baron's Craig is this season's Waikato Steeples winner.

Sir Totara and Lombard raced prominently at the last Grand National meeting. Sir Totara won the Enfield Steeplechase and Lombard beat all but the brilliant Golden Defaulter in the Grand National. G. Jenkins has been en-

gaged to ride Sir Totara, and C. L Gosa will ride Lombard on Saturday. C. R. Cooksley will ride Baron's Craig in the Homeby and the Grand National.

Hurdles Fancy Baron's Craig is trained at Awapuni by E. Temperton, who also prepares Flockhart, one of the early favourites for the Grand National Hurdles.

Flockhart will run against the hacks in the Kennels Handicap on Saturday, and will be ridden by B. T. Jones. Saint Nicholas, a form runner in the Brabazon Handicap after winning at Trentham, was exercised on the sand yesterday. He came through his recent racing looking bright and well,, and may make a big impression in his Riccarton engagements. Saint Nicholas has been nominated for the Caulfield Cup this year, and he will probably make the trip if suitable transport arrangements can be made.

J. T. Anderson is coming south to ride Saint Nicholas on Saturday, and may also go to Austral' / if the trip comes off.
