FLOODED LAND
“Govt. Should Buy It” (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, July 24. A farmer, and former Auckland magistrate, Mr C. H. J. Wily, told the commission of inquiry into financing the lower Waikato river control scheme he considered the Government should buy flood-affected land, and lease it out. This would allow the scheme to be halted until model hydraulic tests were completed, without undue hardship, he considered. If this were not possible, said Mr Wily, he Would favour postponing the works for two years and « half until their full effects could be ascertained by the mode! tests. Under cross-examination, Mr Wily conceded that the works carried out upstream were part of the hazards of tanning near the mouth of the river. “If we believed these works to be disastrous to us we would seek to halt them. We are only human ” He told Mr N I. Smith, counsel for Franklin county: "We, as farmers, accept nature! hazards, but we are objecting to having to pay considerable sums for the privilege of being under m2 made hazards."
