League Asks For Better Arthur’s Pass Road

Concern about the condition of toe Arthur’s Pass highway was expressed at toe annual meeting of the Canterbury Progress League last evening. The new president (Mr H H. Deans) said he felt toe road should be improved in time for the opening of the Haast Pass highway. Mr R. C. Neville said the

policy of toe National Roads Board was to complete the paring of the Lewis Pass highway before doing any major work on toe Arthur's Pass route.

About £lO,OOO a year was allocated for certain sections of the Arthur's Pass road but it would be at least three years before any larger amounts were allocated, he said

Something drastic would have to be done, said Mr D W Gray. “It will be a major project, possibly even requiring a tunnel, but I fee) it is time some action was taken." he said. Mr J. Manson Mid it was never really intended that Arthur's Pass should be connected with toe Haast Pass road which was being constructed primarily to provide a round trip of the island. The retiring president (Mr B. J. Drake) agreed.

A motion was carried that toe Commissioner of Works in Christchurch be asked when something would be done about the road.
