MANILA TALKS
‘I Will If You Wil?
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAIRO, July 21. The Middle East News Agency today quoted the Malayan Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, as saying he would attend the Malaya “summit” with Philippine and Indonesian leaders on July 30 if the Indonesian President, Dr. Soekarno, attends. “I pray God that a clash between Malaysia and Indonesia will not happen. We belong to one race, follow the same religion. We are neighbours speaking one language,” the Tunku said.
In Djakarta last night, Dr. Soekarno said his attendance at the conference “depends on Tunku Abdul Rahman ”
The Tunku, speaking at a reception at the Malayan Embassy, said Malaya and the Philippines had settled their differences over the federation of Malaysia. He called on the United Nations Secretary-General. U Thant, to visit North Borneo to see for himself that the people there desired to join Malaysia. The only problem was the opposition by Indonesia to the federation.
“I think Thant must go himself or send a representative before August 31"—the day the federation will come into being—he said.
