MR C. W. THORN

The death occurred in Christchurch recently of Mr Cecil Walter Thorn, aged 69. Mr Thorn was senior income inspector at Christchurch when he retired in 1952. after 40 years iu the Public Service.

Mr Thorn began his career as a cadet in the Income Tax Department in Wellington—the only city in New Zealand to have such a department at that time. A staff of fewer than 50 was employed. In World War I. Mr Thorn served in Samoa, France, and later in Germany as a member of the Allied Occupation Forces.

His service with the inspecting staff began in 1933, at Auckland. In 1936 he was transferred to Christchurch, •nd in December, 1943, he became senior inspector here. In his youth, Mr Thorn was a keen footballer and rower He was a member of the Nelson College First XV, and later, a senior nlayer for the Oriental Football Club. He represented the Star Rowing Club in a national regatta just before World War I.
