Major Task In Future “The Press" . Special Service WELLINGTON, July 22. Hie problema of MaoriEuropean integration were going to be a major factor in the coming generation, said the National Party president (Mir J. S. Meadowcroft) in an address to the party’s Dominion conference a* Wellington today. “We have got to strive just as hard as we con to avoid any submergence of large numbers of Maoris to a lesser
economic and social standing in the community,” Mr Meadowcroft said. “By legislation and common sanction, it is true that Maoris have Jong fenjoyesd equality of status. Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to say that equality in practice has matched the meaning and spirit of that noble instrument, the Treaty of Waitangi. “We must remember that a very high proportion of our Maori people is in the younger age group,” Mr Maadowcroft. continued. “This in itself makes the yeans just ahead tremendously significant.
“Hie social problems must be tackled with imagination and humanity. I look forward to the day when Maoris will take their places in good numbers in top Government
administration and all the professions, and in leading positions elsewhere in the community.
