SEARCH FOR SHIP
Chronometer Broken (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. A Royal New Zealand Air Force Sunderland flying-boat left Lauthala Bay, Fiji, tonight to search for the trading vessel Aolele lost on a journey from Apia, Western Samoa to Nukunono, in the Tokelau group, 850 miles from Fiji. The vessel is maintaining radio contact with Apia, but because the vessel’s chronometer was broken on Saturday night it is unable to determine its position. The vessel reports that visibility is poor.
The Aolele, owned by the Burns Philp Trading Company in Apia, was on its way to Nukunono to pick up Dr. R. Elliott, of Wellington, and members of his party who have been carrying out a health survey in the Tokelau group, and transport them to Fakaofo in the southern portion of the islands. The Aolele left Apia on Saturday and was expected at Nukunono at 7 am. today. The request for the aircraft to search for the missing vessel was made tonight in Wellington by the Department of Island Territories. The Sunderland left soon afterwards to fly to Apia where it will refuel before leaving for the search area.
