SUCCESSION DUTY
Govt Asked To Act (NJ!. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. A committee of the National Party Dominion conference today passed an amended remit calling on the Govem-
ment to reduce death duties further.
It asked that they be' replaced by succession duties on a diminishing scale. The original remit called for the Government to investigate death duties with a view to abolishing them. Mr F. H. Muirhead (Invercargill), opposed the original remit because, he said, death duties were necessary to avoid the differences between millionaires and paupers in other countries. Mr G. D. Stewart (Dominion Council), said succession duties would tax those who inherited wealth. He did not see why that could not be done, and it would attract outside capital. Mr P. Mason (Onehunga): This warrants the Government’s urgent attention. Mr R. O'Hara (Pahiatua): Development is being held back for 10 or 15 years because of death duties. Succession duties would make money aavilable for ploughing back into the land.
