CROWN LAND TENURE
Security Urged At Conference (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. The Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard) said today there were sometimes differences between the view of catchment boards—interested in soil conservation—>and the Lands Department concerning the use of Crown land in high country. “These differences in opinion are inevitable,’’ he said
when commenting on a remit at the National Party conference asking that the Government take measures to ensure the continued security of tenure of Crown lands in high country. The remit was approved and will be recommended to the whole conference tomorrow.
In proposing the remit, Mr J. D. Mcllraith (Waitaki) alleged there was "a move afoot" to close high country to stock, to take stock off the land and to refuse leases of this land. He said this move would undermine the confidence built up after the coming into force of the 1948 Land Act and slow down or even step the snowballing increase in production necessary in New Zealand today. “In fact, it would undermine the very basis of high country improvement security of tenure,” Mr Mcllraith said.
