P.O. Organisation
Sir. —It has occurred to me that while Mr Simpson, the Chief Postmaster, is investigating the fire evacuation procedure at the Chief Post Office. Christchurch, it would also be an opportune time for him to make inquiries as to the allocation of his employees to the various counters in the Chief Poet Office. As a frequent customer at the letter registration counter, U seems to me ridiculous that during the busiest periods of the day only one assistant is available to handle the inward registered letters and the other assistant who is on duty at the same counter is either answering the telephone or sorting registered mail into its respective pigeon-holes. •At the inquiry counter alongside, up to three »skstants are provided, where only one is necessary. Could some effort be made to provide staff where it is needed most?—Yours, etc.. PROGRESS. July 17. 1963. [The Chief Postmaster, Christchurch (Mr C. J. C. Simpson), said: “Normally there are three officers on duty at the registration
counter during busy periods It has already been realised that the telephone situated at this counter has been interfering with customer service ■nd it is being moved to a new position. Three officers are required on the adjacent counter to cope with the unpaid and »hort-paid correspondence. answering inquiries received by telephone, and attending to counter inquiries, which includes the handing out of mail to counter callers.”]
