DEPENDENT CHILDREN

Statistics Show Increase Children dependent on each married man in New Zealand increased from 1.42 per cent, to 1.52 per cent, from 1956 to 1961, states the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). The number of children under 16 dependent on married men rose in this period by 117,365 to 802,711, a rise of 17.2 per cent. Those dependent on widowers totalled 4932, while 13.716 were dependent on widows —a total of 821,359 dependent children, compared with a corresponding total of 702,839 for 1956. In this period the number of married men increased by 9.3 per cent. Married men with three children recorded the largest numerical increase, rising from 57,937 to 68.166, or by 17.7 per cent. The greatest percentage increase, however, was recorded by married men with eight children, who increased by 38 per cent., from 1164 in 1956 to 1606 in 1961.
