POISON GAS
Denial By Egypt
(N.Z Press Asm.—Copyright) CAIRO, July 9.
Egypt denied reports she was using poison gas against Royalist forces in Yemen, reliable sources said in Cairo yesterday. Official comment was not available, but officials privately branded the report as “ridiculous” and “not worthy of comment."
Diplomatic sources said the poison gas report had been given to the chief United Nations observer in Yemen (General Karl Von Horn) by the Saudi Arabian Prime Minister (Prince Feisal). Prince Feisal was also believed to have approached the Swiss Embassy asking for the intervention of the International Red Cross.
First reports of poison gas began in Cairo about two weeks ago. Diplomatic sources in Cairo said renewed reports coming from Jeddah mentioned eye-witness evidence of the use of gas in the Royalist-held area of Northern Yemen.
Western observers generally discounted the use of poison gas, the Associated Press said. They pointed out that no proof had so far been presented by Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, verbal reports from superstitious tribesmen in northern Yemen must be viewed with reserve. In spite of this, it was generally believed that the Egyptians were using some weapon in northern Yemen which gave the impression of gas
