HAASTPASS HIGHWAY
Last Major Contract
Tenders have been called by the Ministry of Works for the last major reading contract co the highway between Paringa and Haast It involves four miles 20 chains of very difficult country, and the completion date is as far away as March 31. 1965. Other work could delay the opening of the scenic highway alter that date. The gap between the Paringa and Haast ends of the highway is now down to six miles and a half, and this last contract will leave two miles to be done simultaneously by the Ministry of Works in the Bullock Creek area.
To expedite the opening of the highway, a certain amount of temporary Bailey bridging is to be used, some of it by the contractor and some by the Ministry of Works. Tenders for the new contract, which will take the road from the Whakahopai river around the coastal section of the route, will close on August 6.
