Lake Manapouri
Sir, —I have always been interested in any letter written by Arthur Lush, and consider his letters on Lake Manapouri should be taken notice of. This present generation do not know the beauty of our wonderful bush, now being destroyed to provide a few paltry pounds. Sixty-five years ago, to row up the Catlins river from Owaka to Ratanui was a never-to-be-forgotten sight—glorious bush on either side. When farming in the North Island the country was desolate with gaunt stumps and burnt logs—too poor to milk cows on.—Yours, etc., CLEMATIS AND MISTLETOE. July 5, 1963.
