INSTALLATION OF ’PHONES

3500 So Far This Year More than 3500 telephones had been installed by the Post Office in the Christchurch metropolitan area during the first six months of the year, the Regional Engineer (Mr L. D. Bewley) said yesterday. It was expected at least the same number would be installed in the next six months, he said.

About 600 subscribers signed up for service at New Brighton would probably have telephones within the next month. In the Beckenham area a considerable number of the 800 applicants at present on the waiting list would be connected before the.,end of the year, Mr Bewley said. Last year 7000 telephones were installed, and in 1961 a record 9000.

In spite of these efforts there was no sign of the demand slackening, said Mr Bewley. The present waiting list, excluding those who were signed up for service soon, was about 3200. he said.
