PAPAKURA CRASH
No Explanation Found (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 8. No explanation has been found by the Accidents Investigation Branch of the Air Department of the head-on crash of a light aircraft into a clearly-visible sandstone bluff near Papakura on May 7. The pilot, Mr Cyril Oswald Chambers, aged 51, of Manurewa, was killed instantly.
Examination of the wreckage of the plane, a Taylor Cub, showed no defects of any significant character in the engine or its controls and the evidence indicated that the engine was functioning correctly. Chambers, an experienced pilot, had said on the day of the crash that he was going to fly the Taylor Cub “to get the feel of the aircraft.” "For reasons which have not been established, the aircraft flew directly into the face of a bluff in conditions of ideal flying weather,” said the department’s inspector of air accidents, Wing Commander O. J. O'Brien.
