Ordered From Witness Box
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, July 8. A man who ppeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Invercargill today charged with disobedience of maintenance orders was ordered "rom the witness box by Mr J. K. Patterson, S.M., after it was revealed that the man had been drinking and had difficulty in answering questions.
“It’s useless of you to come to me in that state,” the Magistrate said. “I can smell liquor on you from here. A person who comes into court in a condition like this and can’t answer questions sensibly will be dealt with accordingly.” Mr W. Beadle, the court maintenance officer: This defendant has done absolutely nothing but treat these matters with contei pt. Spencer was sentenced to three months’ the warrant to be suspended on payment of £1 a week.
