HAILSTONE STORM

White Sheet On Lawns

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, July 8.

Hailstones pelted down on several eastern suburbs in Auckland shortly before 4 o’clock .this afternoon. The freak storm lasted for about five minutes. The hail covered many lawns in a white sheet and gathered in gutters. A shopkeeper in St. Heliers Bay road, Mr J. M. Linden, said he measured one hailstone and found it was more than an inch in diameter. He said they sounded just like rocks pounding on the roof. Mrs G. F. Chinnery, of Glendowie, commented: “I would not like to have been caught in it. The hail would surely have cut into you.” “I thought our windows were going to break,” said Mrs J. B. Dickson, also of Glendowie. “I couldn’t see the lawn for ice.”

A report from Raglan says residents ran for cover when a sudden storm broke over the township and showered down hailstones.

A steady deluge of rain, accompanied by frequent thunder, turned the Howick Domain into a lake. Water lay two inches deep in places. Power lines were brought down in three places along the Howick Main road. Linesmen worked in pouring rain to repair them.
