Threat By Banda
(N.Z .P .A.-Reuter—Copyright) ZOMBA (Nyasaland), July 8. The Nyasaland Prime Minister, Dr. Hastings Banda (above), told a large meeting in Zomba yesterday if any attempt was made to withhold independence from the country he would declare Nyasaland independent and “damn the consequences." He denied there had been any breakdown of law and order in the country and claimed that reports of violence were attempts by Europeans to have Nyasaland’s independence delayed. • “If any attempt is made by anyone, either here or in London, to withhold our independence from us on any pretext or excuse, I will declare this country independent and damn the consequences—financial, economic, military or international,” he said.
During the last week there have been a number of reports of violence by Malawi Congress Party supporters. Last Sunday, Dr. Banda’s bodyguard beat up three Europeans, including a teenage girl and a 12-year-old boy.
