Auckland Waterfront Dispute
Sir, —As Mr T. E. Skinner, acting president of the Federation of Labour, rightly says, the situation where the Auckland watersiders refuse to work normal overtime just because they are to be charged 5s weekly for parking their motor-cars is Gilbertian. It surely savours of dictatorship when another powerful union supports their undemocratic behaviour. One cannot but feel that people like waterside workers. earning <shall I say) £2O to £3O weekly and riding to work in their own motorcars. should not expect free parking on other people's property. And it is most unfair that the long-suffering public should be penalised just because the watersiders
cannot have their own way, for that is what it amounts to. With all respect to Mr Nordmeyer, what business is it of his to attempt to adjudicate? Is the full weight of a political party to be used against owners ot property who decide to charge for parking on their land? What if we all refuse to work because the City Council charges parking fees?—Yours, etc..
