Decisions
Co-ordinated action on the Christchurch carpenters’ dispute adopted by a special meeting the Canterbury Trades Council last evening included a decision that unions organise job meetings of their members to receive reports on the dispute, and recommend workers to grant financial assistance The special meeting, with an attendance of nearly 70. was the best attended council meeting in recent years, said the president, Mr F. L. Langley.
Other resolutions, adopted on the recommendation of the council’s executive, included: “That the council endorse the action of the Canterbury Carpenters' Union in its claim for wage increases, and rail all unions to grant moral and financial support, until a just and satisfactory settlement of the dispute is reached.”
“That the nature of the dispute, together with the resolutions of the council be forwarded to the national executive of the Federation cf Labour for early .consideration and support.” '
“That permission be sought from the national executive for representatives of the Canterbury Carpenters’ Union, to outline the case."
The three major construction companies involved in the dispute to date are the Fletcher Construction Company, John Calder. Ltd., and the Williamson Construction Company. Nearly 350 tradesmen and 11 construction jobs are involved
