McCAHON’S PAINTINGS
Collector Buys 20 Works
Twenty paintings by the Auckland artist, Colin McCahon. have been bought for an undisclosed sum by an
international hotelier and art Collector. Mr E. J. Danziger. who recently visited New Zealand.
The McCahon paintings v iU be hung with the rest of Mr Danziger's collection in one of London’s largest hotels, the 450-bedroom May. fair Hotel. Mr Etanziger owns ea chain of hotels in Europe and the United States.
Most of the paintings sold have been shown in Christchurch. Several were from the “Bellini Madonna’’ series, some were from the first “Gate” series and others were from Mr McCahon's recent exhibition at the Ikon Gallery. ’Auckland. The director of the Ikon Gallery. Mr Don Wood, negotiated the sale. The remainder of Mr McCahon's Ikon Gallery exhibition will be shown in Christchurch at the Durham street art gallery later this month, in conjuction with a large retrospective exhibition of the works of Mr and M. T. Woolaston, who are New Zealand’s best known contemporary painters.
The retrospective show was arranged by the Auckland City Art Gallery as its major exhibition for the recent Auckland Festival. The Ikon Gallery show was also held during the festival. The combined exhibition will be ooened on June 20 and will close on June 30.
