Heat
Apache showed race-win-ning fitness for the Awamoa Hack Handicap at Oamaru tomorrow when he led the first four heats home during a series of trials from the starting gates at Riccarton yesterday. The distance of each heat was five furlongs. Apache (N. Eastwood) trail, el Cheyenne (C. T. Wilson), Vivien Robe (Galey) and Tuborg (Reriti) in a gap of three lengths across the junction to the course proper three furlongs out, closed quickly on his rivals running to the furlong and won the trial going away by two lengths from Cheyenne and Vivien Robe. Tuborg weakened to fourth two lengths further back but was well clear of the rest. In the second heat Canadiana (A. H. Eastwood) and Topple (Reggett) cleared away from the others early and had the finish to themselves. Canadians was first home by a length and a half Topple beat Yosemite (M. J Skelton) for second by three lengths and Mhor (Hadfield), in a longer gap, shaded Gold Find (Beck) for fourth. The four runners in the third heat ran in fairly close order all the way. Trove (McCann) made most of the pace and hung on to beat Happy Venture (Mein) and Royal Pic (C. T. Wilson) by three parts of a length, with the two-year-old Valuate (N Eastwood) a length and a half back.
Sir Tax (Traecey) won the fourth heat going away by two lengths. He led the chase after Mushtara (Mein) across the junction to the course proper and had the measure of the pacemaker half a furlong out. Foxy Boy (Low) and Mushtara shared second place and Katrine (Hadfield) was doing it easily in fourth place a length behind them.
