Royal Tirage Lame After Very Good School
Royal Tirage (J. L. Coulter) and Taitumu (T. W. Wilaon) were companions in an outstanding school over eight of the trial steeplechase fences in the middle at Riccarton yesterday. But that might be the last time they are associated in a school for a long while. Both horses measured their fences perfectly and gave a faultless display; but Royal Tirage was very lame a little later. The trouble seemed to be in the tendon on his near foreleg. Royal Tirage was to have had his first race over country for his Christchurch owner-trainer. Mr T. Noonan, in the Dromore Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Ashburton tomorrow week.
Tadtumu. which is trained by J. E. Shaw for Mr and Mrs R. R. Jordan, will start
a fresh campaign at the South Canterbury meeting later this month. J. L. Coulter had a troublefree ride on Royal Tirage: but he had more than his share of worry when he rode the hard-pulling Cheroot in a school over the standard hurdles in the middle. Cheroot tried to fence at a sprinting pace and the second flight nearly tripped him. He recovered cleverly; but not before Coulter had lost control and was bumped to the ground. Cheroot was caught, remounted, and continued the school over another four flights and he rapped every one of them.
Cheroot, which might revert to hurdling at Ashburton next week, will race on the flat in the Farewell Hack Handicap at Oamaru tomorrow.
