Waverley Shapes Well In Training

The Riccarton trainer, I. McClure, has two very fit horses in his stable at present. One is Waverley, a light-weight prospect for the open sprint at Oamaru tomorrow, and the other is Melodic, which will begin a fresh campaign at Ashburton next week.

Waverley strengthened hopes of a Riccarton victory in the second leg of the Oamaru double when he sprinted attractively on. the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. With his race rider, W. Traecey, up Waverley left six furlongs behind in 1-18 3/5 and came home from the half-mile in 52 2/5 sec. It was a smart effort on a track in good winter order but still not conducive to fast times.

Another very good gallop was credited to the Oamaru Winter Cup rivals, William David and Ashleigh. These two kept up a strong, even pace while running a mile together in Imin 44,4-seec. the last half in 52 l-ssee. William David, which will be trying for his second Oamaru Winter Cup win tomorrow, had iit on Ashleigh in a similar trial on a greasier track on Tuesday; but there was nothing between them ait the finish of yesterday’s gallop. They were ridden by their respective race-riders, A. Swanson and A. H. Eastwood. Royal Leigh (Reriti) and Keep (N. Eastwood) recorded the second best time for a mile during the morning They left the distance behind in Imin 47sec and came the last half of an even gallop in 53 l-ssec. Royal Leigh is a form runner for the Oamaru Winter Cup and Keep will be trying for his second win on end against the hack stayers at Oamaru. Tailed-Off Flagon (Reggett) was of little use to Paua (Beck) over the concluding stages of their trial. They rounded off their work by sprinting home from the half-mile in 53 3-ssec and Paua had a lead of six lengths at the finish. Race Guide (Cowles) and Lady York (Taggart) ran the last four of seven furlongs together in 53sec. They will be rivals in the Farewell Hack Handicap tomorrow. His Host (Collins) and Sports Date (C. M. Williams) were abreast three parts of a length ahead of Golden Howe (Daly) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 35sec, the last half-mile in 54 3-ssec. His Host, which was under a good hold all the Way. was eased near the end to allow Sports Date to draw level. Melodic (Traecey) worked keenly all the way in his run over seven furlongs. He left his first three furlongs behind in 37 4-seec and rounded off the distance in Imin 3Qsec. Navarone (Swanson) broke away from the seven furlongs a couple of lengths ahead of Clipper (Collins); but they were together at the finish of the gallop, which took Imin 32 3-ssec, the last halfmile in 52 2-s®ec. Has Thrived dipper, which has thrived since his arrival at Riccarton, might make a worthwhile showing in the Farewell Hack Handicap tomorrow. Sal’s Pride (Hadfield) and Magonza (A. H. Eastwood) led Slatey (Taggart) by two lengths after a mile in Imin 50 3-ssec, the final half in 53 2-seec. Sal’s Pride will race against the hack stayers at Oamaru and Slatey is in the Hack Hurdles.

Packwood (A. H. Eastwood) and Golden Vanity (Taggart) worked evenly over a mile. They took Imin 49 2-ssec and came home from the half in 54 4-ssec.

DottereU (C. M. Williams) was no match for his stablemate Meandering (Collins) in a run over six furlongs. Meandering led his companion by three lengths after the first two furlongs in 2fisec and gradually widened his lead to eight lengths at the finish. Meandering’g time for the distance was Imin 20sec.

Magonza. a recent addition to G. R. Felling’s team, will have his next race at Ashburton tomorrow week.
