PAPANUI LABOUR BALL
Nine debutantes were presented tn the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer) and Mrs Nordmeyer by the secretary of the Papanui T abour Party (Mrs M McCreanor) at its ball in the Winter Garden last evening. The debutantes, who were trained by Mrs M. Harper, carried posies of freesias and stocks tied with red ribbon They made their curtsey after walking through an archway of silver ferns, which is the emblem of the Labour Party The debutantes were Misses Varna Boyce, Fay Kiernan, Ann Honey. Lynnette Schroeder, Peta Newsome, Maureen Millard, Mary Hillier, Katrina Keys The lounge, ballroom, and supper room of the W inter Garden were decorated with silver ferns, pot plants and greenery.
More than 300 guests attended the ball. They were received by the vice-president of the branch (Mr E McCreenor) and Mrs McCreanor Invited guests included Mr and Mrs Nordmeyer. the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) and Mrs Manning, the member of Parliament for Christchurch Central (Mr R. M. Macfarlane) and Mrs Macfarlane, the member for Avon (Mr J. Mathison) and Mrs Mathison, the member for Lyttelton (Mr N. Kirk) and Mrs Kirk, the president of the Christchurch Labour Representation Commi 11 e e
(Mr R Jones) and Mrs Jones, the president of the Trades Council (Mr F. L. Langley) and Mrs Langley, the president of the Papanui Labour Party (Mr D McLean) and Mrs McLean Mrs McLean wore a gown of black silk, embroidered with gold thread and redshaded roses. The gown had a full skirt and a fitting bodice with gold shoulder straps and was finished at the back with a floating panel of apricot and crimson tulle Mrs McCreanor chose a gown of midnight and electric blue French embossed brocade with a floor-length, full skirt with a straight fron' panel. The fitting bodice had a square neckline and small sleeves.
Mrs Harper wore a gown of sapphire blue delustred satin with a short bell skirt The fitting bodice had shoe-string straps and was worn with a choir boy jacket with white motif trimmings. Members of the committee who organised the ball were: chairman. Mr E. McCreanor; secretary, Mrs McCreanor; committee, Mesdames C Mumford. L Roseveare, G King, J Nash, L Anquetil, M B Maguire, and M. Burnett Messrs O Burnett, D. McLean and G Pluck.
