WEST MELTON OBSERVATORY

First Sod Cut

The first sod for the new Joyce Astronomcial Observatory of the Canterbury Astronomical Society was cut by Mr F. Andrews, a member of the committee, at West Melton on Saturday.

When the sod was cut, members of the society began to excavate for the foundations of the new building They had previously worked on several Saturdays to clear and fence the section.

The observatory will house the society’s 14Jin reflecting telescope and the 3in refrector bequeathed by Mr Ri F. Joyce The building will be circular and of concrete-block construction, with probably a fibreglass dome Later, if finances allow, a meeting hall will be added.
