There was a slight increase in influenza in Christchurch during ttie four weeks ended May 12, compared with the previous four-week period, according to the research committee of the Canterbury faculty of the College of General Practitioners. The number of influenza cases reported by an average of a Little more than seven doctors in the period ended May 12 was 98. with most of the cases occurring during May.

There was a considerable rise in staphylococcal infections. to 45 cases compared with 30 reported by an average of seven doctors in the previous period. Gastroenteritis accounted for 44 cases, compared with 33 in the previous period. Other diseases reported (figures for the four weeks ended April 14 in parenthesis), included: Acute tonsil4l cases (34); enterovirus (stomach influenza), 17 (15); chicken pox, 6 (1); measles, 2 (8); shingles. 5 (1); otitis media (middle-ear disease). 12 (15).
