The British Ministry of Transport announced that the officials were discussing the terms of a joint report to be submitted to their Governments
The officials had bsen instructed to report on the relative advantages of building a road and rail bridge, a railwav tunnel, or a road and rail tunnel. They will meet again today “The Times” said it had long been believed that a railway tunnel or road and rail tunnel would be recommended.
A railway tunnel would be much cheaper. It was estimated it would cost about £l3O million and would take five years to build. A road and rail tunnel, m the form of a single prefabricated concrete tube laid in a trench on the sea bed would cost about £2OO million and also take about five years to build. A road and rail bridge would cost £2O million more than this and would entail complications to shipping.
