NEW TYPE OF POISON
Not As Toxic For Dogs
(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, June 6.
The possibility of finding a more readily usable poison for noxious animals than 1080 was not so remote, Mr I. G. Mclntosh, senior principal scientific officer at the Wallaceville Research Station, said in Rotorua today. He told the annual conference of the North Island Rabbit Boards’ Association that a type of poison had been found which was not as toxic for dogs, sheep and cattle. A dog was 10 times more sensitive to 1080 than a rabbit, and a sheep was five times more sensitive.
With the new poison a dog was only twice as sensitive as a rabbit. A sheep required twice as much of the new poison as a rabbit. - There had been no confirmed cases of dogs dying through eating carcases of poisoned noxious animals. The possibility of secondary poi/oning of dogs was not to be dismissed. Some noxious animals might eat more poison bait than was necessary to kill them. Mr Mclntosh advised farmers not to accustom their dogs to eating the carcases of noxious animals.
