Five Killed In Road Accidents

WELLINGTON, June 2.
Five people had died in holiday week-end road accidents up to 9 o clock tonight. This was one more than in the Corresponding period last year.
Officers of the Transport Department said traffic over the first part of the holiday had been light but in many cases motorists’ speed had been too fast foe conditions Traffic officers would be keeping a special watch tomorrow Two were killed in motor-accidents on Queens Birthday last year. Two young men and a girl were killed in a motor-car accident in Station road, Ngahinapouri. at 10 pm on Saturday They were
Denys Patrick Scott, aged 20 son of Mr and Mrs E A Scott, of Peachgrove road Hamilton Miss Glenise Ethel Strong, aged 16. daughter of Mr and Mrs L. Strong, of Winter street. Hamilton Richard Forest McLachlan, aged 18. son of Mr and Mrs M McLachlan of 86 Grand Vue road. Hamilton.
The car. which was driven by Mr Scott, left the road and hit a telegraph pole.
Motor-Cyclist Dead
A 16-year-old motor-cyclist was killed when he collided with a car on the main highway three miles south of Dannevirke tonight. He was Peter Janies Castel Spence, of Dannevirke The accident occurred about 5 10 pm., in rain. The youth was found to be dead on arrival ait the hospital. No-one in the car was injured. Car In Ditch A man was killed at 230 p.m today when a car overturned into a ditch on the r e Puke-Whakatane highway, near the Ohinepanea railway statidh, 13 miles south of Te Puke He was Whetu Marama White, aged 19, a freezing worker, of Pirangi street. Panmure His sister, Miss Carol White, aged 17, suffered shock and a fractured wrist She was admitted to Tauranga Hospital. Two other passengers received attention at the scene of the accident and were allowed to return to their homes. Head Injuries The death has occurred of a 22-year-old carrier after serious head injuries suffered when his car collided with the Piako bridge at 6.30 p.m last Monday. He was Claude Robert Mclntosh, of Morrinsville He was admitted to the Waikato Hospital Mr Mclntosh was driving alone when the accident occurred, and his ear was- badly damaged. Bridal Couple A young bridal couple travelling to their wedding reception at the Hoe-o-Tainui Hall ended their journey at the Waikato Hospital after their cai was involved in a collision soon after 8 p.m on Saturday
Two other passengers id the bridal car, one of them the brother of the bridegroom, were also admitted to hospital. The driver of the other car escaped injury. Those injured are Laurence Henry Blue, aged 21. suffering from shock; Mrs Shirley Blue, aged 18. concussion and shock; Roger Keith Blue, aged 16, fractured leg: M:ss Shirley Lynette Waters, shock Their condition tonight was satisfactory. Bus Overturned A five-ton. 30-seater R N.Z.A.F. bus overturned on Shelly Bay road, which skirts Wellington harbour on ‘he western side of the Miramar peninsula.-at about 6 10 last night. The driver, L.A.C. R Melville. of Wellington, was able to crawl out of the bus through a broken front window He was alone at the time He suffered fractures of the left wrist and two fingers. I The bus. on a routine trip from the city to the RNZ A F Station. Shel y Bay, lay on its side leaking petrol and oil and blocking the road for an hour and a half. Firemen with foam spravs ready stood by as two trucks righted it. The accident will be the subject of an Air Force inquiry
