BASKETBALL UNINTERESTING PLAY IN FOURTH-ROUND MATCHES

To enable players and referees to see the Rugby test, all games in the Canterbury Women's Basketball Association's competitions were played in the morning, and the cold wind and cool temperatune certainly took their toll of players. Fourth-round games in the senior competition were, with one exception, most uninteresting, and produced no surprises. St. Niccholas narrowly beat West Old Girls, but Technical, in its most convincing display of the season, soundly beat Community Centre, and Kakatai similarly beat Teachers' College. Sacred Heart had the bye.

Results were:— St. Nicholas 32, West Old Girls 30. Technical 41, Community Centre 26. Kakatai 54. Teachers' College 12. Competition points: Kakatai 6, St. Nicholas 6, West and Technical 4. Community Centre and Sacred Heart 2. Teachers' College 0. West Old Girls v. St Nicholas The first game of the morning between West and St Nicholas, was interesting and exciting. The chilly conditions and early-morning lethargy produced some minutes of indecisive play, but defence interceptions by K. Reece and M Islip gave West an early advantage. Resourceful play by the St. Nicholas centres gave their forwards scoring chances and both K. French and J Cusdin goaled well to level the score at 7-all. Steadier play by West, with fine shooting by the forward. C McMaster, caused minor lapses in St. Nicholas's attack and almost effortlessly West went into a four-goal lead West failed to maintain form and some faulty passes were vigorously intercepted by St Nicholas. Excellent forward play by J. Cusdin enabled St Nicholas to regain the initiative until half-time, when the score was 16-alI. The second spell produced basketball of a good standard as both teams battled hard for supremacy Commendable restraint by St. Nicholas minimised the efficiency of West's strong forward and defence thirds, but St. Nicholas's slight lead was frequently challenged St. Nicholas led by 25 goals to 24 when injury to its defence. B Smith. necessitated her •eplacement and the five-minute stoppage seemed to revitalise St. Nicholas and robbed West's ittack of any sting The Initial accuracy of the West forwards C McMaster and A. Wood, failed at this critical stage, and though several moves were well executed St. Nicholas was allowed to strengthen Its hold on the game and deservedly won by 32 goals to 30. The St. Nicholas centres, N Baker. J Soanes, and N Blonquist. gave able support and deserve credit for their tireless play. The defence. B Smith and M. Crossen. kept the capable West forwards strangely subdued Referee: Miss P. Gallagher. Kakatai v. Teachers’ College Exerting strong pressure in a>l thirds, Kakatai soon had the inexperienced College team completely subdued The experienced Kakatai forwards L Price and J Blair, combined with great skill and understanding and the Teachers’ Col-

lege defence, which, tn recent games, has gained some defree of mastery over oppotsen U. could find no counter to the polished play of the Kakatai pair. The Kakatai centres. J King. M. Neiman, and J Martin, monopolised possession for long periods and were seldom extended by their partners. The Kakatai defence. E Dell and L Shaw, fave the Collefe forwards few chances even to feel the ball. The half-time score was Kakatai 29. Teachers' Col-

lege 5. With victor;- assured Kakatai had no difficulty in malntaimr.f its hold on this game and seemed Intent only on doubling its half-time score. That it did not do so is some tribute to a sorely-tried team, whose play in this second spell, was slightly more purposeful. The final score was Kakatai M. Teachers' College 12. Referee: Mrs B. Little

Community Centre v. Technical Community Centre found form immediately and attacked strongly, unsettling Technical The forwards. A. Wyatt and J Thompson, goaled skilfully to give Community Centre a sixgoal lead before Technical's first shot was netted

Technical suddenly found form and Community Centre was now permitted few opportunities to consolidate its attack Technical's superior tactical play, capably Initiated by the centre, A Blair, coupled with the now capable forward play of J. Kimber and J. Kelly, soon gave Technical complete mastery, which was fully exploited until half-time, when the score was Technical 20. Community Centre 13. The pattern of the game remained unchanged in the second spell. Technical was superior tn all thirds, and the Technical forwards relished their opponents' lack of defence and showed their appreciation by foaling brilliantly from all round the circle. Community Centre offered diminishing resistance as the spell progressed. The final score was Technical 41, Community Centre 26 Referee: Miss B. Stone School Games Results in the first round of the secondary schools' basketball competition were:— A Grade —Papapul 41. Vila Maria 20; Rangiora 24.
