The New Zealand horse Plantation ran a brilliant first-up second tn the John Canty Stakes over six furlongs at Ipswich yesterday and moved into joint favouritism with Kilshery for the Stradbroke Handicap next Saturday. Plantation (6/1). drawn the outside horse in a field of 22 and first away, was headed in the middle stages by a couple of horses, then raced to the lead again and was beaten only In the last three yards by Highmara (12/1). Official distance was a nose. With Scottish Crag (7/2 favourite) a head away third In a photo-finish.

The New Zealand jockey, K. Tinsley, rode Plantation.
