Belltana Wins First Leg In On-Course Double

DUNEDIN, June 2.

Belltana. which was having his first start, set the stage for £lO4 15s 6d on-course double at Wingatui on Saturday w’hen he narrowly beat Wog. another lightly supported runner, in the Trial Stakes.

The double was rounded off "by the well-supported Lucky Son in the Brighton Improvers’ Handicap.

In a total doubles pool of £2472, Runaway was the hot favourite with 1266 10s tickets The next best .supported was Etoile Este with 835 tickets.

Belltar.a carried 269 tickets and 78 5s tickets were reinvested on Lucky Son. The second leg favourite was Baywin with 83 tickets.

Belltana had the run of the race, following Etoile Este and Maguire's Peter most of the way. He Joined the pacemakers at the furlong and held on by a head from Wog. which finished fast after being close up all the way. There was a length and three-quarters to Maguire’s Peter and a length and a half to the hot favourite. Runaway, which had every chance, but weakened over the final stages

Rhythm Review made ground for fifth, ahead of Etoile Este. Entrance. Patwood and Toby Twilight. The Rlccarton candidates Royal Duke and Flashest. finished 16th and 18th respectively. Second Leg Lucky Son scored a decisive win in the Brighton Improvers’ Handicap after having the run of the race.

Lucky Son, which had been the runner-up in his two previous races, was the second favourite. He is trained by his

Wingatui owner, J. B. Brown, and was ridden by R. J. Skelton.

Lucky Son followed the pacemakers, Bright Countess and Modern Imp, at the half mile where Silver Spire and Mogambo were almost in line ahead of Fort Garry. Glen Yon, Golden Glen, Bustup and Woodcock

There was little between Golden Glen, Bright Countess, Silver Spire and Lucky Son at the furlong with Mogambo closest of the others.

Lucky Son drew away for an easy three lengths win. Silver Spire beat Bright Countess by half a length for second and Mogambo was three-quarters of a length back fourth. There was half a neck then to Fort Garry ahead of Bustup, Baywyn, Golden Glen, Golden Syrup and Highland Fair.
