June 1-Foreign-bred horses, including the defending champion Cadiz from New Zealand, today proved no match for Winonly :n the Californian Handicap at Hollywood Park here, United Press International reported. Cadiz was the best of the foreigners, finishing sixth but not getting a share of the purse that he won last year as a surprise first in the Californian.
The jockey, Willie Harmatz, who flew across the country from New f Jersey to ride Cadiz, said the New Zealand seven-year-o'd ''had no excuses. We were just out-run." An Irish-bred horse, Typhoon 11, was seventh. while the English-bred Crazy Kid finished eighth, and his countryman, Valentine. w T as ninth
Rex C. Ellsworth's New Zealander. Commanding 11, ridden by America's leading jockey, Willie Shoemaker, was last in the field of 12 starters and, like Cadiz, "ran out of gas." in the words of his rider.
Commanding II was obtained by Ellsworth, as a sire prospect, but so far has not demonstrated ability to maintain his speed around the turns.
Shoemaker said the colt handled the turns better than he had tn previous starts, but was no threat .to the leaders otherwise.
The winner, Winonly. covered the one mile and half a furlong in Imin 41 4-ssec.
Rapido Scratched The New Zealand horse. Rapido, was scratched from the 12,000 dollars Tjai Purse Race at Hollywood Park yesterday. The race was won by Drill Site.
Rapido ran seventh In his .American debut four weeks aeo.
