Vamoose Too Good In Otago Steeples

"The Press" Special Service

DUNEDN, June 2.

Vamoose, winner of the last Grand National Hurdles, made a conspicuous start as a steeplechaser when he easily accounted for his eight opponents in the Otago Steeplechase, the feature jumping event at Wingatui on Saturday.

Vamoose had won over light country at the Cattle Flat meeting, but the Otago Steeples was his first test over country at a totalisator meeting.

Raced by Messrs W L Aynsley and D H Robertson. Vamoose is trained at Gore by E A Winsloe, the leading trainer in New Zeeland at the present time Vamoose was the win favourite and paid £3 3s He was ridden by the Washdyke trainerjockey B T Jones. The Ranger dwelt ait the start and lost about 50 yards He gradually improved his position and was the joint leader at the last fence, but he could not foot it with Vamoose in the run home.

The place favourite. Port Lanyard, jumped poorly throughout and showed none of the dash which had characterised his three previous winning runs He* met interference when Napoleon Bonaoarte nearly came down near the mile, but that was not the cause of his failure. Dashing Display Napoleon Bonaparte gave a dashing display of jumping except a 4 the small sod wall a. the end of a mile and a quarter Up to thait stage he had been a clear leader but he lost a good deal of ground His rider, D Stock, did well to regain his seat and from the manner in which he finished on for third. Napoleon Bonaparte looked an unlucky ■runner

'spoleon Bonaparte soon took over the role of pacemaker and jumping brilliantly was five lengths clear of Cashmere ahead of Lucky Bill Bayline, and Arctic Star with Vamoose Port Lanyard and Waikiwi Star in line well clear of The Ranger after ’jumping the third fence With a round to go it was Napoleon Bonaparte by three lengths from Bayline, with Lucky Bill and Cashmere ahead of Arctic Star. The Ranger Vamoose. Port Lanyard and Waikiwi Star

Ngpoleon Bonaparte almosi came down at the smaD sod wall near the mile This left Bayline and Cashmere disputing the lead running to the seven where The Ranger had moved up to third place ah nd of Port Lanyard and Vamoose which was deer of Napoleon Bonaparte Cashmere Itfd at the water jump from The Ranger Vamoose and Bayline The Ranger and Vamoose la ided over the last jump on •erms Vamoose had too much pace for his opponent in the run home and drew away to win untested by five lengths Similar margins * rated Napoleon Bonaparte and Bayline with a length to 'ashmere ahead of Pori Lanyard Waikiwi Star and 'icky Bill Easy For Grant Grant justified his favouritism in the Tahuna Hack Steeplechase with an easy five lengths win after being a clear leader over the last mile and three-quarters Trained by his owner J J Flynn at Wairio the Super gelding was ridden by the Wash dyke jockey A Cowan The only horse to make a race of it with Grant was the 'ey one favourite. Goodbye which closed the gap to about two lengths at the las' fence, but he failed to sus tain his effort Grand Monarch was the first casualty He lost his rider at the second fence Drum Major fell at the pos’ and rails near the mile, and Nelson’s Neptune broke hts .fl-fetlock going to the seven furlongs He was destroyed Fell Away Nelson’* Neptune disputed th* early pace with Grant bu’ he was unable to stand the pace and soon fell away with a round to go. Grant

Sydtrev was a weakening th,.-d going to the half-mile when Grant was four lengths clear of Goodbye The remainder were well spread out
